Welcome

When David and I were married six years ago, my grandfather sat me down at our reception. He told me that he thought it was a good idea for newlyweds to live at least a thousand miles away from their families during the first years of marriage; that way, they could learn to be their own team. Since David and I were moving in two weeks to Miami to begin our doctorates, I heartily agreed. And it worked—moving to a new city where we didn’t know anyone meant we had to rely on each other and become our own family unit. First in Miami and later in Platteville, where we settled into our first academic jobs, we approached our nomadic lifestyle as a grand adventure.

And then came Isaac.

Before Isaac was born, we had decided that we would have the first two weeks at home by ourselves. I didn’t last a week before I called my mom and told her to come up. And even though we agreed not to travel this summer, the three of us (four, counting our tortoise Senor) spent six weeks back in Texas. Upon saying goodbye, our family was noticeably more distraught than when it was just the two of us (while my sister and I both cried about our leaving, she dismissed my tears by saying, “at least you get to take him with you!”). They couldn’t believe it would be months before they saw Isaac again, and by then he’d be a different baby.

So this blog is an attempt to keep them up on Isaac’s latest and greatest deeds. We hope to post a photo or a video several times a week—though all bets are off once school starts. David and I might also contribute miscellany—he wants to do occasional movie reviews. But for the most part, this will be unabashedly Isaac-centered. Enjoy!
